Defining Characteristics

Clarksburg roots go back to 1752 when Ashford Johnson received a patent from the Colonial government for a 40 acre lot of land on which he built an inn two years later. This inn would be host to General Braddock during the French and Indian war and later President Andrew Jackson would dine at the Inn on his way to his inauguration. In 1770, Jamie, grandson of trader John Clarke, built a general store in town and operated it for the next 30 years. During that time, Clarke was appointed postmaster and by 1775 the town became known as Clarksburg.
