Gaithersburg is located in northern Montgomery Country Maryland, to the northwest of Washington DC. It has a west and east side, due to the fact that it is split down the middle by 270. Gaithersburg is one of the larger suburbs, located about 25 miles northwest of DC.

Gaithersburg, or more recently known as Northern Potomac, is a wonderful, more quiet suburb of DC. There are several shopping areas, Washingtonian Center, Kentland’s, and the new Crowne Plaza, that are major attractions. All of these shopping areas feature large garages, since the majority of them are walking only. All three feature movie theaters, excellent dining options, as well as bars or shops that often have live music. It was also voted top for its ethnic and economic diversity by WalletHub in 2016, as it has a home and place to grow for people of all backgrounds and economic standing. Gaithersburg is also home to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), IBM, Lockheed Martin, MedImmune (AstraZeneca) and more. Thus making it a prime location for those who work for those companies.
Since Gaithersburg is located along 270, car is the most optimal mode of transportation. The further you get away from DC, the further apart things are. Having a car is a must in Gaithersburg. But the red line ends at Shady Grove, just a few minutes’ drive from the heart of Gaithersburg, making it a very popular commute option for those needing to get to DC.

The shopping centers like Washingtonian Center, Kentland’s and Crown all have upscale apartment buildings and townhomes surrounding them. Further out from there, are single family homes of all sizes. Small homes accommodate the younger smaller families, while large mansions like homes are also available.
As a part of the Montgomery County School District, the elementary, middle and high schools that are located in Gaithersburg are some of the best in the nation. Montgomery County has been recognized nationally multiple times, for its outstanding academic and athletics programs.
University of Maryland College Park, University of Maryland at Shady Grove, Montgomery College (voted top junior college on the eastern seaboard), Johns Hopkins and University of Maryland Baltimore Campus, are all within an hour’s drive of Gaithersburg.
